2018 Rio Track and Field Welcome Communication

Hello Track and Field Families,

We are fast approaching the Spring 2018 season! We will officially start Track and Field Practice on February 5th, 2018 at 3:15; athletes will meet on the track. Practices should end by 5:00 p.m. on M/T/W/F and 4:00 p.m. on Thursdays. If you haven’t already signed up for the season, please stop by and see Coach Boler in the PE office or Coach Slaughter in the main office and sign up!

For those athletes looking for some preseason conditioning, we will be meeting every day except Thursdays at 3:30 for a dynamic warm up / conditioning session of approximately 60 minutes. Runners who are interested in distance events (800 meter and longer) will meet for preseason conditioning every day at 3:15 p.m. except Thursday which will meet at 2:00 p.m. The distance athletes plan to condition for approximately an hour and a half during the preseason conditioning sessions.

We have returning coaches and several new members to our coaching staff this year:

  • Head Coach: Distance Runners – Coach Gordon Hubble
  • Assistant Coach: Distance Runners – Coach Lea Wallace
  • Assistant Coach: Sprint Distance Runners – Coach Sammy Stroughter
  • Assistant Coach: Hurdles/Long Jump/Pole Vault – Coach Trevor Boler
  • Assistant Coach: Throwers – Coach David Badovinac
  • Assistant Coach: Long Jump/Triple Jump – Coach Kevin Hubble

With the season fast approaching please make sure your athletic clearance is current. You will not be able to participate if you have not been cleared! If you have already participated in a sport this year you will need to stop by the Athletics office and ask the Athletics Secretary, Janet Cutler, to please activate you for Track & Field. If you are participating in athletics for the first time this school year, you will need to sign up at www.athleticclearance.com. You can find instructions on the clearance process here.

If you need to have a physical and can’t get a timely appointment with your doctor, Dr. Sockolov on Scripps Ave (916-927-1114) takes walk in appointments for Rio Athletes daily at 4:00 p.m. at a reasonable price.

We are currently working on finalizing our season meet schedule. The preliminary schedule is currently available at athletic.net. Please note, not all athletes participate in every meet. Many of the meets are invitational meets which have entry requirements. All athletes will participate in the CAL Center meets and CAL Championship meet. We will have a finalized meet schedule in the near future which will indicate which meets are all athletes or invitational only… please stay tuned.

We are working on building a distribution list for weekly email communications as well as the use of the Remind App to keep you informed.
